On March 29, 2019, the LCC Secretariat, along with the TWG members discussed the technicalities relative to the conduct of the anticipated 2019 National Literacy Conference in September. Presided over by Dr. Heidi B. Macahilig, PNU representative, the said body ensured that this year’s conference will zoom in on pertinent topics on literacy and research, incorporating the emerging concepts of 21st Century Skills and Industry 4.0, and provide a participants-oriented avenue which will both yield to global citizenship of the literacy leaders, advocates, partners, and learners. Other matters considered during the meeting were the guidelines on the appointment of the new NGO Council representative, possible partnership of LCC with Facebook, and LCC’s nomination for UNESCO International Literacy Prize.

The said planning meeting was held at the Teacher Education Council (TEC) Secretariat conference room at the Department of Education, Central Office.

LCC being the premier advisory and coordinating body for all literacy endeavors in the country, has committed in thriving and utilizing forged and strengthened partnership amongst its stakeholders and literacy partners.

To effectively mobilize and deliver the Council’s literacy initiatives from the national down to the ground level, its Secretariat underwent a comprehensive and relevant capacity building workshop focusing on partnership strategies last March 20-22, 2019 at DepEd NEAP-R10, Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City. The objectives of the said workshop were to: (1) identify ways on how to collaborate with stakeholders within and outside of the LCC Secretariat; (2) develop, manage, and sustain partnerships with DepEd units and other stakeholders; and (3) strengthen partnerships with public and private agencies and organizations in the fulfillment of LCC’s vision, mission and core values.

Discussions on the foundational concepts such as the importance, and effective strategies of partnership were shared by various resource persons, including specialists from DepEd’s External Partnerships Service (EPS) facilitating the said activity. Other topics covered were developing the skill of identifying and anchoring different types of partners according to the needs through a series of workshops. Lastly, the Secretariat was also equipped with technical skills on maintaining the LCC Website page which will be essential in the promotion and implementation of the LCC’s programs and projects.

On March 14, 2019, the LCC Members and Representatives, together with Dr. Lorna Dig Dino, DepEd Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction and Chairperson of LCC attended the 137th Council Meeting. Held at the Department of Education, the said meeting featured discussions on pertinent details of the upcoming 2019 National Literacy Conference; Output on the recently conducted research on literacy spearheaded by Philippine Normal University (PNU); Appointment of the new NGO council representative; and the conduct of 2019 Functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survery (FLEMMS) which was presented by the representatives from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), among others.

The Council Meeting is being held quarterly to ensure that important matters on literacy are discussed and addressed.

The LCC Secretariat recently attended the DepEd Cyber Expo with the theme “DRIVE 2019: Digital Rise of Philippine Education” which tackled essential and emerging advanced ICT concepts yielding towards the 21st Century Skills and 4th Industrial Revolution or Industry 4.0. The said event was jam-packed with plenary sessions which drill on the country’s integration and importance of ICT to teaching and learning process honing the learners to be globally competent and responsible digital citizens. Different sponsors also staged their innovations, most especially how they can significantly boost education, through break-out sessions and exhibits. Moreover, the event recognized the awardees of the 2019 DepEd ICT Achievers Awards across the country. The DepEd Cyber Expo was held on March 12-14, 2019 at the Philippine International Convention Center, CCP Complex, Pasay City.

On March 8, 2019, the LCC Secretariat representative joined the celebration of International Women’s Day as it honors all women globally for their significant contributions in transforming the society through their beautiful and unique traces all around the world.

As Dr. Sandra Montano, Commissioner of Philippine Commission on Women, one of the resource speakers, highlighted the role of women in the society, she mentioned that “Women are not empowered to overpower men. But to be an asset to the community and be the driver of change. To meaningfully contribute to the development and changes in the world.”

DepEd Curriculum and Instruction Undersecretary Lorna Dig-Dino, the Chairperson of the Literacy Coordinating Council today graced the Division PTA Forum being conducted by the Schools Division of Sorsogon in Region V. The event, held on January 24, 2019 at Villa Isabel Hotel and Resort, Sorsogon City was participated in by various PTA officials, parents, public school administrators, and teachers. At the concluding part of her talk, the LCC Chair introduced her advocacy on “Filipino Women for Literacy.” This movement aims to “ensure multiple literacies for the least, the lost, and the last of our fellow human beings.”
